Subclinical Auditory Dysfunction: Relationship Between Distortion Product Otoacoustic Emissions and the Audiogram

نویسندگان

چکیده

Purpose Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and audiometric thresholds have been used to account for the impacts of subclinical outer hair cell (OHC) dysfunction on auditory perception measures physiology. However, relationship between DPOAEs audiogram is unclear. This study investigated this by determining how well DPOAE levels can predict among individuals with clinically normal hearing. Additionally, age, noise exposure, tinnitus ability were evaluated. Method Suprathreshold from 1 10 kHz pure-tone 0.25 16 measured in 366 ears 194 young adults (19–35 years old) audiograms middle ear function. The at all frequencies each frequency. Participants grouped self-reported exposure/Veteran status, self-report tinnitus. Results Including threshold prediction model improved predictions compared a based only sample mean thresholds, but these improvements modest. f 2 4 5 particularly influential predicting above kHz. accuracy varied participant characteristics. On average, predicted better than Veterans, tinnitus, oldest age group. Conclusions These results indicate complex audiogram. Underestimation some groups suggests that additional factors other OHC damage may impact within categories. findings suggest differ terms they reflect dysfunction. Distortion product otoacoustic emissions in tinnitus patients.

Tinnitus is a symptom that affects a great number of patients. Its diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up are difficult, owing to its subjectivity. The authors propose the use of distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) in tinnitus evaluation. They studied three groups: controls, having no complaint of tinnitus and normal hearing; group 1, presenting tinnitus and normal audiometry; and gr...

Relationship Between Distortion Product – Otoacoustic Emissions (DPOAEs) and High-Frequency Acoustic Immittance Measures

BACKGROUND Pathologies that alter the impedance of the middle ear may consequently modify the DPOAE amplitude. The aim of this study was to correlate information from 2 different clinical procedures assessing middle ear status. Data from DPOAE responses (both DP-Gram and DP I/O functions) were correlated with data from multi-component tympanometry at 1000 Hz. MATERIAL AND METHODS The subjects w...

Effects of exercise and noise on auditory thresholds and distortion-product otoacoustic emissions.

Differences in auditory thresholds and distortion-product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) levels were investigated as a function of gender, ear, frequency, and experimental condition: quiet sedentary activity, exercise, noise, and exercise and noise combined. In general, participants displayed significant elevations in auditory thresholds of approximately 6 to 13 dB following the two conditions em...

Comparison of standard and abbreviated distortion product otoacoustic emissions procedures.

Standard and abbreviated distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) procedures derived using the Grason Stadler Model 60 instrument were compared. The standard and abbreviated procedures were compared at frequencies of 1000, 1250, 1593, 2000, 2531, and 3187 Hz for 48 ears from 28 subjects. The subject pool included individuals with normal hearing and those with sensorineural hearing loss...
